Picture for Lia

20" x 16" watercolor on Strathmore 140 lb cold press, 2008 (Click on image then magnifying glass icon to see at full size) SOLD

I created this painting as a gift for My daughter, Nathalie’s best friend Lia (10 years old at the time) and her family. It’s a celebration of Lia (pictured as a fairie) and some of the concepts and characters special to her. The family are playing UNO and includes Lia’s cat, Cutie. Her mom is a gnome, wearing a red hat and is dressed in her favorite colors of olive, plum and rust, while her dad, another gnome, has the stethoscope of his profession as a pediatric emergency doctor.

This was created from a loose background wash, glazed to reveal trees and ferns of a forest setting. Mid ground leaves and the tree were glazed then blended wet-on-wet, while highights such as water droplets were lifted, with point sparkles scraped back with an exacto knife. Details were added wet on dry after glazing.

The word Lia is embedded in 26 different locations throughout the work.

The solution to each location of the name “Lia” can be seen below:
