Unisex Sweatshirt: Save the owls

The Kenyan, or Mackinder’s eagle owl, (Bubo capensis mackinderi), is a subspecies of the eagle owl. Mackinder’s eagle owls in central Kenya are generalist predators capable of exploiting an agricultural niche that is devoid of most other predators.
This is a large owl, (the largest of the eagle owls), though intermediate in size among other large Bubo owls. Its total length ranges from 46 to 61 cm (18 to 24 in).
This McKinder’s eagle owl (Bubos mckinder) was rescued by Shiv Kapela, co-founder of Kenya Bird of Prey Trust, in Naivasha.

About the painting
I saw the MacKinder’s on a trip to the trust and was impressed by its sheer bulk and presence, though he was a bit camera shy, so I resorted to Getty images for a stock photo as my core reference.
My friend Shiv Kapela, one of the founders of the Trust, had reared this giant since it was a rescued fledgling, andwarmly recount sits characterful antics.
The painting took approx.. 80 hrs over one week, using no white pigment. The deep purple background is created using matte gouache paints, but the owl is pure watercolor. Paints used were Daniel Smith Extra Fine Watercolors, burnt Umber, Raw Sienna, French Ochre, Yellow Ochre, Naples Yellow, Prussian Blue, Paynes Grey and Hansa Yellow, with Cadmium Orange and Permanent Yellow for the eyes. The paper is Handmade Special 300 lb very rough cold press from Legion.

Conservation stand
25% of all proceeds from eagle owl art and merchandise is donated to Kenya Bird of Prey Trust, who work tirelessly to rescue, and protect all raptors, but who have a soft spot for Kenya’s many diverse and characterful owls. They also monitor raptor populations and educate local Kenyans on the value of raptors and how to protect raptor environments. They also lobby government to minimize above-ground electrical pole wiring, which is a primary hazard for birds of prey.
