I moved to New York from Sydney, Australia in 1994. The city is teaming with icons, from the Chrysler and empire state buildings, brownstones, corner pizza shops, stretch limos, roadside coffee and bagel carts, mounted police, yellow cabs and of course the ubiquitous I Luv NY logo, seen on coffee mugs, t-shirts, baseball caps and signage. And who can forget the original King Kong movie from 1933?
This was a self-promotional project, created to celebrate New York City. I embedded nearly sixty iconic images: slices of pizza, cups of “cawfee” and I heart NY logos in the image, which features King Kong atop teh Empire State Building, with archetypal New Yorkers about their professiosn and passtimes.

The technique used was to draw quite finished pencil sketches of each character, scan them in and place them into micro scenes, then copy them at that size and arrangement, produce a multiple layer Photoshop file for each scene, and finally copy scene folders back into the base document. The whole project took about three weeks, and I had planned to produce both posters, for sale at souvenir shops and possibly a 1,000 piece jigsaw puzzle. Between investment barriers, general procrastination and re-prioritizing my time as I got busier and busier as a freelance artist, I never ended up doing anything with it. C’est la vie!
